The Hobbit is one of my favorite childhood books so when I found out that Peter Jackson is making The Hobbit movie I confess I screamed out loud in joy. It is going to be an epic fantasy adventure movie in two parts.
I like Lord Of The Rings (both movies and book) but The Hobbit was my first and most favorite of Tolkien books. It felt more simple, straightforward and action orientated than Lord Of The Rings (who felt a bit too long when I was reading it in my teens).
You can't imagine my excitement when a friend of mine in LOTRO (Lord Of The Rings Online, a mmorpg based on Tolkien lore of Middle Earth) told me that The Hobbit trailer is just released.
As far as I can tell, Peter Jackson has sticked to the Tolkien storyline in The Hobbit book.The Hobbit is a story about a young hobbit Bilbo who gets invited (well, Bilbo would say 'forced') to join the 13 dwarves who are on their quest to kill Smaug, the dragon in order to reclaim back their dwarven treasures. In the middle of their adventures in the wilderness, Bilbo meets a creature that will change not only his life but later the whole destiny of the Middle Earth - Gollum.

The Hobbit Trailer
As you see in The Hobbit movie trailer, it promises another movie in the style of Lord Of The Rings. Well, I didn't expect this to be incredibly original work with completely new style and feeling. And why would it be? The Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy was successful so The Hobbit in the same style should work, right? Hmm... It is nice in a way to see Ian McKellen as Gendalf again, Elijah Wood as Frodo, the good old gloomy Gollum. But it gives an unpleasant The Hobbit: Lord Of The Rings IV feeling. The old Hobbiton visuals, even the old costumes... God, they even have included the same soundtrack in the Hobbit trailer. I truly hope I can expect something more original in the movie and this is just to give a sneak peak.
The look of dwarves is weird. They look a lot like grownup men with short legs. Kind of funny and sad at the same time. Gimli was much better done. Not only visuals feel weird, but also the way how they are depicted in the trailer. They are portrayed as gnomes that are funny and comical. Comedy elements are always more than welcome and Peter Jackson used to make fun of Gimli (which made him so lovable character) but since the whole Hobbit movie and book are about dwarves (and of course the poor hobbit who got forced to join their adventures) I hope this won't get turned in a farce. Though again, I can't tell yet since The Hobbit Movie is not yet finished. As a Tolkien fan I am looking forward to watch it.

That's a very insightful thought. Fantasy genre usually includes some violence and dragon slapping, I mean killing. And you're right, The Hobbit is much more lighthearted than LOTR which makes me quite curious.
Also, it's a 2part movie. LOTR is a long book, but 2parts for The Hobbit?

I'm glad that they kept the same tone and environments for the Hobbit. It helps to make Jackson's interpretation of the franchise consistent the world more real. Also, when I read the Hobbit as a child, I didn't feel that it was lighthearted at all. It has comic moments, but for the most part it felt like a very serious adventure to me. Maybe that's just the way Jackson read it as well.

Well, The Hobbit wasn't really about 'go on this journey or the earth will end' like the apocalyptic storyline of LOTR. No offence to the dwarves and their stolen treasures. A rampaged city is a tragedy but on a much smaller scale. The song the dwarves are singing in the trailer, I imagined it to be more lighthearted. Generations had actually passed from the time the dragon stole the treasures and the big journey. There was another song the dwarves were singing and that was about eating all Bilbos food and breaking his pots and such. :)
Though yeah, I am looking forward to watch the movies and see how they feel. Maybe I'll discover a new feeling or something else I missed in the story.

My worry with the trailer is how "dark" they have made the story seem, which just isn't true to the book. It's a children's book in the way LOTR isn't, so it's tone needs to be different if Jackson wants to be true to the book.
On the other hand, if he wants to be true to the prequel nature to the LOTR films, then he is going to have to darken it up.
So I think it looks like it will be much more serious than the source material. But they aren't going to mess with a successful formula.
